Business

Is the company getting stronger, not just bigger? · 2 findings
−3 of −30
  • Quality of growth
Net interest income rose only 5.4% in H1 2026 to EUR 1,160m, and new mortgage lending fell 16% to 2.9bn; earnings growth (+11.7%) is largely carried by fees (+15.5%), which are more market-sensitive.
    −2
  • Scale and business mix
Mid-sized bank concentrated in Spain (Spanish pre-tax profit 716m of about 830m including Portugal); Ireland (loans 5.2bn) is still small. Less diversification than the large Spanish banks.

  • Multiples vs own history
    P/B 2.21 vs 0.98–1.98 in 2022–2025, trailing P/E 13.4 vs 6.2–11.7 and forward P/E 11.9 vs 6.2–11.6. The share price has more than tripled since 2022 (5.24 → 16.35 EUR), while EPS has doubled (0.61 → 1.23); dividend yield has fallen from 9.1% (2023) to 3.7%. The re-rating has been taken.

Cracks

Cash flow, customers, debt, insiders, guidance and what sits behind the headline numbers. · 3 findings
−4 of −35
  • Deposit competition
In September 2026 Bankinter raised Cuenta Digital to 3% for new customers on up to EUR 100,000, guaranteed to April 2027, and keeps a welcome bonus of up to EUR 600; the deposit war with Revolut and Openbank is pressuring funding costs just as rates are rising.
    −2
  • Credit quality
NPL ratio 1.92% and coverage only 69.2%, lower coverage than CaixaBank (81%); a slowdown may require extra provisions.
    −1
  • Governance
Insiders own only 0.67% of the shares according to stockanalysis.
    −1

Plus

Only documented strengths. · 3 findings
+6 of +15
  • Profitability and efficiency
ROE 19.1% and ROTE 20.4% in H1 2026 with cost/income 34.3% (36.1% a year earlier); costs rose only 2.7% vs income +7.3%. Among the most profitable banks in Europe.
    +3
  • Dividend covered by earnings
Payout ratio about 48% of net profit (dividend 555m vs. earnings 1,150m TTM); dividend per share has grown five years in a row and +14% in 2025.
    +2
  • No bank tax
The CFO stated in January 2026 that Bankinter can fully offset the Spanish bank tax against corporate tax in 2025, 2026 and 2027 (deduction of up to 25% and no large tax credits), unlike CaixaBank, which paid EUR 304m in H1 2026.

Caveats

What the score does not capture, or where the data is weak.
Bank: EV, ROIC and FCF are not meaningful; valuation on P/B, P/TBV and P/E, and the payout is held against net profit. EPS and P/E for 2021 are distorted by the spin-off of Línea Directa, so history is measured mainly from 2022. Stockanalysis shows +2.3% in share count over a year, but the cash flow shows only small offsetting purchases and sales of own shares (about EUR 81m each way); the figure is not reconciled, and no deduction has been made for dilution. Bankinter pays no Spanish bank tax (IMIC) due to the deductions in the law, so there is no bank tax deduction. Forward P/E and EPS forecasts are adjusted figures. Insider ownership 0.67% according to stockanalysis; a large family shareholder (Cartival) has not been investigated and not counted. Q3 figures 22 Oct 2026.
