Business

Is the company getting stronger, not just bigger? · 3 findings
−7 of −30
  • Quality of growth
Revenue fell 1.5% TTM, and EPS is 2.02 TTM vs 1.83 in 2021 and 2.18 in 2025; Q2 net income rose only 1.4% pro forma. Analysts expect +1.8% in revenue and +5% in EPS for 2026.
    −3
  • Profitability
ROE 8.6% TTM (8.0–10.0% in 2021–2025) on total equity; RoTE 14.3% and cost/income 54.7% in H1 are above targets, but the return on book capital is the lowest among the large French banks.
    −3
  • Business mix
Specialised finance (incl. car loans and leasing) is hit by a weak car market and used-car prices that have fallen about 12% from the peak; management calls 2026 a 'difficult year' for the car activities.

  • Multiples vs own history
Trailing P/E 8.9 vs. 6.1–8.1 in 2021–2025 (record), P/B 0.62 at the top of 0.39–0.62, and dividend yield 6.4% vs. 6.9–14.3%. The price has risen from 7.33 to EUR 17.83 since the end of 2022 (+143%), while EPS has only risen from 1.64 to 2.02 (+23%).

Cracks

Cash flow, customers, debt, insiders, guidance and what sits behind the headline numbers. · 4 findings
−8 of −35
  • Banco BPM and M&A
Crédit Agricole owns 29.3% of Banco BPM (partly via derivatives) and, according to Il Sole 24 Ore, is studying a joint takeover with UniCredit in which CA would get about a third of the assets (25 Sep); alternatively a merger with Crédit Agricole Italia. Italian Golden Power policy and a large acquisition with thin CET1 create execution and dilution risk.
    −3
  • Capital buffer
CET1 for Crédit Agricole S.A. is 11.3%, markedly below BNP Paribas (13.0%) and the Nordic banks (about 17%); the stronger group capital sits with the regional banks, not with the minority shareholders.
    −1
  • Controlled company
Only 874m of 2.99bn shares (29%) are free float; the regional banks control the company via SAS Rue La Boétie and decide strategy and distributions, and insiders' ownership is not disclosed.
    −2
  • French government debt and politics
French banks fell 3–4% on 27 Aug on concern over public finances: 10-year OAT yield about 4.1%, spread to Germany about 88 bp, and proposals for a tax on dividends and buybacks ahead of the presidential election. Crédit Agricole is the most domestically exposed of the large French banks.

  • Dividend
Dividend 3.3bn + buybacks EUR 0.3bn (TTM) = 3.6bn, below net profit of 6.1bn; dividend yield 6.4% and interim dividend of EUR 0.57 (50% of H1 distributable profit).
    +2
  • Targets exceeded
Record revenue of 7.4 bn EUR in Q2; RoTE 14.3% and cost/income 54.7% in H1 are better than targets.

Caveats

What the score does not capture, or where the data is weak.
The analysis covers the listed Crédit Agricole S.A. (ACA), about 62% of which is owned by the regional banks via SAS Rue La Boétie; it is not the whole Crédit Agricole group. Bank: EV, ROIC and FCF are not meaningful; valuation on P/B and P/E, and the payout is held against net profit. Stockanalysis' ROE (8.6%) is calculated on equity including goodwill and hybrid capital; the company's RoTE was 14.3% in H1 2026. TTM EPS (−13%) is affected by a gain of EUR 304m on the deconsolidation of Amundi US in Q2 2025. Peers: P/B 0.62 and forward P/E 7.5 at ROE 8.6% are in line with BNP Paribas (0.78/7.9/10.5%) and Société Générale (0.64/8.3/9.5%), so no peer deduction. Consensus EPS is adjusted. The French special tax on large companies and LCL's net interest margin have not been investigated separately. Q3 results 30 Oct.
