Business
Is the company getting stronger, not just bigger? · 1 finding−2 of −30
- −2Quality of growthRevenue fell 0.2% in 2025 and is only +3.3% TTM; net interest income rose just 0.6% in H1 2026. The profit improvement (+6.5% to EUR 5.55bn) is carried by fees (+4.9%) and costs (−0.7%), not by lending income.
Price
Today's multiples against the company's own history and its peers. · 2 findings−8 of −35
- −7Multiples vs own historyP/B 1.70 vs 0.62–1.57 in 2021–2025 (record) and trailing P/E 12.2 vs 6.2–11.0 (record); dividend yield 5.6% vs 6.6–15.7%. The share price has risen from 1.57 to 6.76 EUR since 2022 (+330%), while EPS has risen from 0.23 to 0.55 (+139%).
- −1PeersP/B 1.70, P/TBV 1.98 and forward P/E 10.8 at ROE 14.3% vs UniCredit (1.78/1.87/10.7, ROE 15.8%) and Danske Bank (P/B 1.82, P/E 13.0, ROE 13.9%); no discount despite a lower return than UniCredit.
Cracks
Cash flow, customers, debt, insiders, guidance and what sits behind the headline numbers. · 1 finding−6 of −35
- −6Acquisition of MPSExchange offer for all of Monte dei Paschi at EUR 30.6bn (16 Intesa shares + EUR 1 per MPS share): about 4.9bn new shares (+28%) and about EUR 3bn in cash, about 30% of own market value. Antitrust opened an in-depth investigation on 15 Sept., 635 branches have to be sold to Unipol for 3.5bn, MPS has responded with its own bids for Banco BPM and Banca Generali, and Intesa has complained to Consob. A large, contested integration after many years of discipline.
Plus
Only documented strengths. · 3 findings+5 of +15
- +3Dividend and buybacksDividend 6.6bn + buybacks EUR 2.4bn (TTM) = 9.0bn, below net profit of 9.7bn; total shareholder yield 8.5%, and the 2026 distribution is expected at about 9.4bn vs. a guided result of over 10bn.
- +1Raised guidanceRecord H1 with 5.55 bn EUR (+6.5%) and operating profit +9.1%; 2026 expectation raised from 'about 10 bn' to 'over 10 bn' EUR.
- +1Credit qualityGross NPL ratio 1.8% and net 0.9% with 50% coverage; about 1,200 companies returned to performing status in H1. The balance sheet has been cleaned up after decades of Italian bad loans.
Caveats
What the score does not capture, or where the data is weak.
Bank: EV, ROIC and FCF are not meaningful (stockanalysis' FCF swings between −40 and +102bn due to balance sheet movements); valuation on P/B, P/TBV and P/E, and the payout is held against net profit. The share count is −2.9% over a year, but +1.36% in the latest quarter (issuance of EUR 1.7bn TTM, probably an employee plan), so net buyback is smaller than the gross figure. The share price is affected by the ongoing exchange offer for MPS (16 Intesa shares + EUR 10 in cash per 10 MPS shares); the outcome depends on Antitrust, the ECB and Delfin (17.5% of MPS). CET1, bank tax/IRAP surcharge from the Italian budget law and exposure to Italian government bonds have not been investigated. Q3 results 30 Oct.
