Business
Is the company getting stronger, not just bigger? · 4 findings−13 of −30
- −5MarginThe operating margin is 6.8% TTM vs 9.7% in 2023 and 8.3% in 2024. The adjusted return on sales in Trucks North America fell to 8.4% in Q2 (12.9% a year earlier), and Mercedes-Benz Trucks earns only 6.0%. Full-year guidance for the industrial business is 7–9%, clearly below Volvo's level (10–12%).
- −3ROICROIC has fallen from 10.9% (2023) and 8.2% (2024) to 4.1% TTM, and ROE from 18.5% to 5.1%.
- −3Quality of growthRevenue in Trucks North America, the largest and most profitable division, is €17.2bn TTM vs 23.6bn in 2024 (−27%). Group revenue is €44.6bn vs 55.9bn in 2023, partly because Trucks Asia has been deconsolidated. Analysts expect +8% in 2026.
- −2Capital allocationA €1.1bn buyback to June 2027 plus a dividend of about €1.4bn (€1.90 per share) equals about €2.5bn a year. FCF guidance of €3–3.5bn includes €1.4bn of one-off income from ARCHION, so underlying FCF does not cover the payouts.
Price

- −5Multiples vs own history and peersForward P/E (2026e) 11.0 vs 8.1–11.4 in 2021–25 (median about 8.3), P/S 0.73 vs 0.47–0.67 (highest) and P/B 1.42 vs 1.16–1.62. The stock is up about 19% this year, and the market is already paying for the US recovery.
Cracks
Cash flow, customers, debt, insiders, guidance and what sits behind the headline numbers. · 4 findings−9 of −35
- −3US tariffsTariffs cost about €221m of gross profit in Trucks North America in Q2. The 25% Section 232 tariff on trucks and parts applies, and production in Mexico is only protected as long as USMCA holds; from 1/7/2026 each country can withdraw with six months' notice.
- −3North America and EPA27The order season and pre-buying ahead of the EPA 2027 rules ended in August (18,200 Class 8 orders), and orders cooled. The final NOx rules for 2027 are still not set, so part of 2026's strength may be pre-buying that will be missing in 2027.
- −2Europe and busesMercedes-Benz Trucks' return on sales is only 6.0% because of the start-up of the new parts centre in Halberstadt and higher development costs, and the bus sales forecast has been cut to 20,000–25,000 units because of Latin America and Mexico.
- −1Share sale by Mercedes-BenzMercedes-Benz has begun selling its stake (a first sale of €0.4bn in H1 2026). Further sales could weigh on the share price.
Plus
Only documented strengths. · 3 findings+5 of +15
- +2Raised guidanceAdjusted EBIT guidance was raised to €3.6–4.1bn (from 3.2–3.7bn), and the return on sales in Trucks North America to 9–11% (from 6–8%). Management expects 11–13% in Q3, partly because the application on US content has been approved, lowering tariffs.
- +2Net cash (industrial)Industrial net liquidity rose from €7.1bn to 8.3bn in Q2 (about 25% of market value).
- +1Order intakeOrder intake in Trucks North America rose 156% y/y in Q2, and Daimler had 45% of Class 8 orders in July.
Caveats
What the score does not capture, or where the data is weak.
Industry set to 'Machinery & automation' like Volvo (heavy trucks and buses). Cyclical = yes (truck cycle, freight and replacement). stockanalysis' net debt of €18.7bn and EV multiples include Daimler Truck Financial Services; the industrial business itself has net liquidity of €8.3bn. Stockanalysis' trailing P/E (30.5) does not match net income (€2.55bn TTM, about P/E 13) and is not used. TTM results and Q2 FCF are lifted by the ARCHION transaction (merger of Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino, €1.4bn cash effect), and Trucks Asia is deconsolidated, so the revenue decline is partly technical. China exposure is small (joint venture with Foton). Electric trucks (eActros/eCascadia) have not been examined and give 0 points. Q3 comes 6/11.
