Business
Is the company getting stronger, not just bigger? · 2 findings−3 of −30
- −2Capital allocationInari Medical was bought for about $4.9bn in February 2025 as the entry into peripheral vascular. That very unit is now the problem child: the plant cannot deliver full stock to customers, and management itself says it prevents new orders.
- −1ROICROIC is 12.5% vs a WACC of 7.75%. That is solid, but lower than 14.3% in 2024 and essentially flat since 2021 (12.0–14.3%). Goodwill from the acquisitions means negative tangible equity.
Price
Today's multiples against the company's own history and its peers. · 1 finding−5 of −35
- −5Multiples vs own history and peersForward P/E 17.2 vs 24.2–27.4 in 2021–25; EV/EBITDA 15.9 vs 21.3–24.7; P/FCF 22.5 vs 31–45. It is the cheapest level in five years, but the FCF yield is only 4.45%, P/B is 4.4, and the lower price reflects lower growth expectations. (The old claim of '31% below the 10-year median' cannot be checked; the table only goes back to 2021.)
Cracks
Cash flow, customers, debt, insiders, guidance and what sits behind the headline numbers. · 5 findings−18 of −35
- −7Execution (cyberattack and Inari supply)An Iran-linked cyberattack on 11/3 wiped about 80,000 devices and paralysed orders and production for weeks. The after-effects hit the Inari plant: supply drags growth down 70–80 bp in Q2 and Q3 and now also in Q4. The stock fell 8.8% on 8/9 when the CFO disclosed it.
- −3Customers are shiftingHip sales disappointed on weaker demand in Europe. The CFO says patients are postponing procedures for financial reasons (inflation and higher deductibles), and that Stryker lacks a competitive hip impactor product.
- −4Insider tradingDirector Ronda Stryker sold 310,000 shares ($96.8m) on 26/5 and 350,000 shares ($117.8m) on 18/8, about $215m in total. The general counsel, HR director and a group executive have also sold. There are no open-market purchases in 2026.
- −2Lawsuit and governanceOn 23/9 the law firm Hagens Berman began investigating whether Stryker disclosed enough about the ongoing problems in peripheral vascular. So far it is only an investigation, not a class action.
- −2EstimatesTD Cowen cut its target from $355 to 298 on 22/9 (Hold), citing the margin, and Canaccord cut from $400 to 385. Guidance of 8.3–9.3% organic growth is maintained, but several expect it will not be met.
Plus
Only documented strengths. · 3 findings+4 of +15
- +2Margin expansionThe operating margin has risen from 19.3% (2022) to 21.9% (2024) and 23.8% TTM, and the gross margin from 63.1% to 65.6%, despite the cyberattack and tariffs. That shows pricing power and scale advantages.
- +1Robust balance sheetNet debt of $12.0bn equals 1.6x EBITDA (down from 2.6x in 2022), and interest cover is 10x. The dividend (28.7% of FCF) has been raised 16 years in a row.
- +1Skin in the gameInsiders, mainly the founding family, own 9.1%. The plus is halved because the family sells continuously.
Caveats
What the score does not capture, or where the data is weak.
The share has fallen 25% over 52 weeks and 8.8% on 8/9 alone, when the CFO said the Inari supply problems continue into Q4. 2026 guidance (organic 8.3–9.3%, adjusted EPS $14.95–15.10) is maintained, but TD Cowen has doubts. Q3 figures come 29/10. Ronda Stryker has sold about $215m in 2026, and Hagens Berman is investigating the disclosures.
