Business

Is the company getting stronger, not just bigger? · 4 findings
−26 of −30
  • Margin
Operating margin −178% and FCF −USD 120.6m TTM; ROIC −65%. Revenue of 47m is mainly booked deferred licence revenue (including 11.9m in Q2 from expired BMS rights), not recurring sales. The loss is counted only here.
    −10
  • Segment of the future and pipeline concentration
After the halt of reni-cel (sickle cell) and a reduction of the workforce, the entire value rests on one preclinical/phase 1 asset, EDIT-401. No other named programmes in the Q2 report.
    −6
  • Capital allocation
Share count has risen from approx. 84m to 153.6m over a year (approx. +82%), most recently via the May 2026 issue of 55.6m shares at 2.25 USD with a full warrant at 3.50 USD per share. Cash has fallen from 657m (2021) to 212m despite repeated issues.
    −7
  • Moat
The Cas9 licence to Vertex provides fixed and sales-based payments (5-40m USD per year to 2034), but a large part is passed on to Broad/Harvard, and competitors are further ahead clinically in LDL-lowering gene editing.
    −3

Price

Today's multiples against the company's own history and its peers. · 1 finding
−6 of −35
  • Multiples vs own history and peers
P/S 9.5 and P/B 4.2 versus a quarterly P/S of 2.7-10.6 over the last two years, i.e. at the top of the range. EV of USD 249m is low versus Intellia (EV 1.28bn) and Prime Medicine (EV 727m), but Editas is earlier in the clinic, and EV equals about two years of spending. Analysts' price target (USD 6.10) is not used here.
    −6

Cracks

Cash flow, customers, debt, insiders, guidance and what sits behind the headline numbers. · 5 findings
−24 of −35
  • Binary clinical risk
EDIT-401 has just received ethics approval and completed CTN in Australia (8/10/2026); the first patient has not yet been dosed. First safety data in Q1 2027 and topline data for part 1 in 2027. There is no human data yet, only data from monkeys (about 90% LDL reduction).
    −8
  • ATM programme and warrant overhang
New universal shelf of USD 400m (31 Aug 2026) with an ATM sales agreement of up to USD 150m via Leerink. In addition, 55.6m warrants at USD 3.50, expiring 30 days after positive phase 1 data (at least three patients with over 80% LDL reduction) or by May 2029 at the latest. This puts a lid on the share price around USD 3.50.
    −6
  • Competition
Eli Lilly (Verve, PCSK9 base editing) and CRISPR Therapeutics (CTX310/CTX320) already have human data in LDL/Lp(a) editing, and Intellia has an EV of USD 1.28bn with a more advanced pipeline. Editas needs to show clearly better efficacy to become partner-relevant.
    −5
  • Short interest
29.96m shares sold short = 19.5% of shares and 26% of free float; 11 days to cover. The market is betting heavily against the company.
    −3
  • Sold future revenues
Liability of USD 55.7m for the sale of future revenues (the DRI agreement, effective interest rate 7.7%), so part of the Vertex payments does not accrue to shareholders.
    −2

Plus

Only documented strengths. · 2 findings
+5 of +15
  • Net cash and runway
Cash 211.6m USD as of 30 Jun 2026 and net cash approx. 196m; the company guides runway into 2H 2028, i.e. past the first human data.
    +3
  • Non-dilutive licensing revenue
Vertex pays an annual fee of USD 10m and fixed/sales-based payments of USD 5-40m a year through 2034 for the Cas9 licence.
    +2

Caveats

What the score does not capture, or where the data is weak.
Penny deep dive (the price of DKK 19.09 is above DKK 3). CRISPR company that, after the stop of reni-cel, now has only one clinical track: EDIT-401 (in vivo editing that upregulates the LDL receptor). A price of USD 2.90 (stockanalysis 9/10-2026) and 153.58m shares at 31/7-2026 (10-Q) give a market cap of about USD 445m. Nordnet showed DKK 2,780m. Stockanalysis' dilution of +21.7% is misleading: the share count has risen from about 84m (Q2 2025, calculated from EPS) to 153.6m, i.e. about +82% in 12 months. The number of pre-funded warrants from the May offering has not been disclosed. Revenue (47m TTM) is mostly booked deferred license revenue and is not cash. New ATM of USD 150m (Leerink) under a USD 400m shelf filed 31/8-2026. No going concern warning. Largest owners and insider trades not reviewed in detail.
