Business

Is the company getting stronger, not just bigger? · 4 findings
−15 of −30
  • Return on capital
ROIC only 4.3-6.6% in 2023-2025 and 8.6% TTM (incl. the OxyChem gain) vs 26% in 2022; ROE 5.9% in 2025. Even at a high oil price the company earns only its cost of capital.
    −4
  • Quality of growth
Revenue fell for three years in a row from USD 36.6bn in 2022 to USD 21.6bn in 2025 despite the CrownRock acquisition; the EPS lift from 2.21 to an expected USD 6.68 in 2026 comes from the oil price, not from volume (production guidance only about 1.43m boe/d).
    −4
  • Margin
Operating margin 25.8% (TTM) on Iran oil prices, but only 17.2% in 2025 and 19.8% in 2023-2024 vs 37.3% in 2022; net margin 7.5% in 2025.
    −3
  • Capital allocation
CrownRock bought for about USD 12bn with debt and shares in 2024, share count +1.8% in a year and -3.4% dilution in 2025; the stabilizing chemicals business was sold to Berkshire, and the share price fell 7% on the sale.

  • Multiples vs own history
Forward P/E 11.2 vs 8.4-22.6 in 2021-2025 and EV/EBITDA 5.3 vs 4.2-7.2 - looks cheap, but at the top of the oil price; on 2027 expectations (EPS about 4.8 USD) P/E is about 13. P/B 1.86 is at the top of the 1.1-1.9 range after +49% in a year.
    −6
  • FCF yield
FCF yield 7.3% (TTM) vs 9.4-11.9% in 2023-2025 and below the European oil companies; P/FCF 13.8 is the highest in five years.
    −3

Cracks

Cash flow, customers, debt, insiders, guidance and what sits behind the headline numbers. · 3 findings
−10 of −35
  • Oil price
Analysts expect EPS to fall 29% and revenue 6% in 2027 when the Iran premium in the oil price disappears; the company is a pure oil and gas producer without the chemicals business as a cushion. Midstream is also expected to be lower in Q3 because gas spreads are narrowing.
    −5
  • Environmental liabilities
Occidental kept OxyChem's old environmental liabilities, indemnifies Berkshire and has provided a guarantee for them.
    −3
  • One-off items
The after-tax gain of 3.1bn USD from the OxyChem sale in Q1 2026 makes up almost half of TTM net income and flatters trailing P/E (9.6).
    −2

Plus

Only documented strengths. · 2 findings
+4 of +15
  • Debt reduction
The principal of the debt fell 1.9bn USD in Q2 to 11.8bn USD (from 15.0bn after the OxyChem sale), with 10bn as the next target; net debt/EBITDA 0.8.
    +2
  • Raised guidance
Production of 1,433 Mboe/d in Q2 above the top of guidance; full-year guidance raised to 1,423–1,453 Mboe/d with unchanged capex of USD 5.5–5.9bn and Midstream guidance +USD 300m.
    +2

Caveats

What the score does not capture, or where the data is weak.
Q3 2026 is reported on 9 Nov; TTM figures run to 30 Jun 2026. TTM net income (USD 6.5bn) includes an after-tax gain of USD 3.1bn from the sale of OxyChem to Berkshire Hathaway (closed 2 Jan 2026), and the oil price is lifted by the Iran conflict, so TTM margins and trailing P/E are not normalised. Berkshire's ownership and the preferred shares give no points; the remaining amount and redemption of the preferred shares have not been investigated. Insider trading and the economics of the low-carbon projects (DAC) have only been investigated superficially. 13F purchases give no points.
