Bull case
Eight new wells and better water handling lift production from approx. 12,300 to 20,000 barrels/day in 2027. At Brent $70–75 that gives EBITDA of approx. CAD 250–300m; with EV/EBITDA 2.5–3 and net cash the market value could reach CAD 800–1,000m (approx. CAD 0.9–1.1/share, 1.5–2x), plus a reinstated dividend. A 3x also requires a higher oil price.
Bear case
The drilling programme disappoints, erosion or low water in the Marañón stops operations and exports, or Peru politics/PetroPerú cause problems. At 11,000 barrels/day and Brent $55, EBITDA is close to the guidance level (US$30m), cash is eaten by capex, and the stock could fall to C$0.25–0.30 (−50%). Zero is unlikely with net cash and production.

Business
Is the company getting stronger, not just bigger? · 4 findings−19 of −30
- −6Margin and ROICOperating margin has fallen from 69% (2022) and 46% (2024) to 22% TTM, net margin from 33% (2024) to 7%, and ROE from 23% to 3% (ROIC 5%). Q4 2025 gave a loss (−US$7.8m), and Q2 2026 was burdened by a write-down of US$10.2m on a sold drilling rig.
- −6Quality of growthProduction has fallen from the record 19,473 barrels/day in 2025 to approx. 12,300 in September 2026; 2026 guidance is 11,750–12,250 barrels/day, and revenue is down 26% TTM. The decline is due to a lack of rig, pump changes and limited water capacity – the dividend was suspended in January 2026 to preserve liquidity.
- −5Moat and asset concentrationPrice taker without a moat: approx. 97% of production comes from one field (Bretaña, Block 95) in the Peruvian Amazon, and the oil must be shipped by barge via Brazil. Block 131 contributes only approx. 370 barrels/day.
- −2Capital allocationDividends of 16–19% direct yield in 2023–25 were paid within FCF, but had to be stopped when production fell; the company bought its own drill rig and sold it again at a loss of USD 10.2m.
Price
Today's multiples against the company's own history and its peers. · 2 findings−9 of −35
- −5Forward multiple vs historyForward P/E 5.3 is the highest in the company's history (1.8–4.4 in 2021–25), and the market cap has risen 47% since the end of 2025 (351 → 515 m C$), even though earnings have fallen – the market is already pricing in a recovery to 20,000 barrels/day.
- −4Trailing multiples vs history and peersTrailing P/E 22.7 vs 2.3–5.8 and P/FCF 8.3 vs 2.9–5.5 in 2022–25. EV/EBITDA 2.7 is in the upper part of its own history (1.2–3.5) and in line with Latin American E&P peers; P/B 0.68 is low.
Cracks
Cash flow, customers, debt, insiders, guidance and what sits behind the headline numbers. · 5 findings−16 of −35
- −5Jurisdiction and counterpartiesEverything is in Peru with political and economic instability; 2.5% of royalties go to a social trust for the local communities, and the Los Angeles oil is sold on short contracts to PetroPerú's Iquitos refinery, where PetroTal itself writes that it monitors the credit risk.
- −5Flood, erosion and logisticsThe erosion protection project at Bretaña is largely suspended, and a new tender was first expected to be completed at the end of August 2026; river water level is mentioned as a risk to export and operations.
- −3Execution of drilling programmeThe recovery rests on an 8-well program (first well 25H drilled from 21/9-2026, about 15 m US$ per well) and a new platform; 2025 showed that rig and pump problems can knock production down by a third.
- −2Oil priceBudget and EBITDA guidance (US$30m) are based on Brent at $60; collars cover only about 1.1m barrels through March 2027 with floors at $55–65.
- −1Insider tradingCEO Manuel Pablo Zúñiga-Pflücker sold 2.2m shares at about C$0.515 on 31/8–1/9-2026 (to cover tax on vested PSUs); no insider purchases found.
Plus
Only documented strengths. · 2 findings+3 of +15
- +2Net cashRestricted cash USD 105.4m (total USD 136.9m) vs loans of approx. USD 37m and total debt incl. leasing of USD 74.5m at 30/6-2026; the minimum requirement for free cash is USD 60m, and FCF was positive in Q2 (USD 17m).
- +1Improved termsAgreement with Perupetro in September 2026 on a new sliding royalty (5/9/15% depending on price) for new production in the Los Angeles field (Block 131).
